The first time I remember the Democratic party being in really bad favor, was during the Vietnam war, as the nation blamed that war on Johnson who actually took over the war from Kennedy, who was honoring Eisenhower’s commitment to France to protect Vietnam after WWII, as Vietnam used to be a French colony, prior to Germany’s invasion and occupation of France. This is what obligated Eisenhower to grant that protection to Vietnam, however, it didn’t take into account the movement of communism into the region after the world war. I can’t remember any labels that were put on any of our citizens, then, as all labels were reserved for our enemies, like the gooks. (VC) There didn’t seem to be too much to divide our resolve at that time, that I can remember, but that seemed to change over time, as Republicans gained more control over our government over the subsequent years, after the Nixon, fallout and the resurgence of the Republicans when Reagan emerged. This was the hint that today could occur, if America wasn’t careful in the leadership they allowed to lead them. What most American’s fail to remember, is that it was France who came to our side, during our Revolutionary War, to help us, defeat the British, for which we should be eternally grateful. If they didn’t help us, we would not be a country. How can we ask, why were we in Vietnam, to help the French protect their possession? Weren’t we obligated to do so, by the actions France took, to help us become a sovereign nation?
The Vietnam Resolution began the year, I was born, in 1954. It never escalated until the early 60s when we started sending advisers over there. America never objected to the help, until the fighting escalated in the mid-sixties.
Why do I think about this when I think about labels and the division, they create? Who did we label during this time of division in our country, in the 60s and 70s? The only label I can remember from that time is the one the soldiers, gave the VC, gooks. Are we all gooks, today?
